About Me

I have been teaching history and social studies at the high school level for nineteen years, with some of that time in the Boston area and some in San Francisco. I have also served as a college counselor and writing coach/tutor during my time in schools. Content areas of focus have included the history of the United States, modern Europe, Islam, China and the modern world. Across all of these classes, I have given ample attention to the development of those skills important to academic success: critical reading and analysis of sources, construction of arguments in written and oral form, organization of materials and ideas, research and inquiry, and study and presentation skills.

Education

I earned my Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 2001, where I majored in history and minored in international relations. I went on to get my Master of Arts degree from Brown University in 2007, with a focus on non-Western and environmental history. Over the course of the summers, I have attended classes at Boston University, Harvard University, the Gilder Lerhman Institute and the Naviance Institute - learning more about certain areas of history and how to best support students as historians, thinkers and writers.

Employment

Upon graduating from college, I worked as a teaching assistant at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts (2001-2002). I moved from Nobles to the Pingree School in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, where I worked as a full-time history teacher, class dean, advisor and coach (2002-2006). At Brown, I served as a teaching assistant for an introductory class on African history. Upon graduating, I moved to Drew School in San Francisco, California where I served as a full-time Social Studies teacher, college counselor, advisor and writing coach (2007-2018).
